In Saxon times, Queen Bertha walked across Lady Wootton's Green on her way to church every day. She and her husband, King Ethelbert, who together helped bring Christianity back to Kent, are remembered with two statues. Created by Ramsgate sculptor, Steven Melton, in 2006, the sculptures were based on years of research by the Canterbury Commemoration Society. They were the first figurative statues unveiled outside the cathedral but within the city for 100 years.
