Sitting at the highest point of Lewes, the Castle provides beautiful views over the town and surrounding countryside – comprised of forest woodland and the South Downs. Built in 1087 by William de Warenne, the first Earl of Surrey and William the Conqueror’s brother-in-law, this quaint motte and bailey castle is rich in heritage and particularly unusual because it only has one motte. Visit in the summer for the chance to catch one of a range of theatrical and musical events in the castle garden.
