Lewes Town Hall is an extremely historic building. In the 14th Century an inn, owned by the monks of Southover Priory, stood where the Town Hall stands today. Following the dissolution of the monasteries during Henry VIII’s reign, the building became the Star Inn. During the 18th century, a supper and ball was held each month for the local gentry, however, in 1890 the building was purchased to hold council meetings and thus became the Town Hall. Here you will find a magnificent renaissance staircase and one of the largest professional maces found in the south.
