Lewes is a market town with a long history dating back to Roman times. There are three Sites of Special Scientific Interest in Lewes and these are Lewes Downs, a site of biological interest, Lewes Brooks, a habitat for water beetles and snails and Southerham Works Pit, a disused chalk pit where many fossilised fish remains have been discovered.

  I like Lewes - it has a charm and a character all of its own. The town sprawls over the hills above the River Ouse and it can take some climbing to get to the top of the town from the bottom. I have always wanted to visit the town's world famous Bonfire Night celebrations but have so far failed - but I will one day do it. For car parking try parking outside the centre of town and walk in, you'll discover many quaint shops en route.   - Penny T
