Lydd is located on Denge Marsh and was one of the first islands to form in the Romney Marsh. Lydd still has a guildhall and a mediaeval courthouse. The town was once notorious for being a smugglers’ base. Parts of the church date back to the latter half of the 5th Century. The oldest tomb in the churchyard dates from 1551.

  Latest Lydd Review

Lydd is one of those villages that seems too large to be a village and yet too small to be a proper town and it's location deep within the Romney Marsh means it's quite some distance from anywhere else. I chatted with some residents who seemed to like this isolation a great deal, but are still very welcoming to visitors who take the time to stop over on their way through from Rye to Ashford or Tenterden.   - Jenny Catt

From 1994 to 2005 I spent a lot of time at Lydd while working at Dungeness 'A' and 'B' and can honestly say that I enjoyed every minute of it.

Friendly people, very welcoming, good company. Stayed with Anne and Peter Payne at Chatswood Lodge on the High Street and treated like one of the family.

Barry Cloke and the gang at the British Legion, and 'The Highland Brigade' (Don Maclean, Donny Mabon, and Harry Joss) at the 'Institute'. Many happy memories. Thanks to you all.
