Maidstone High Street was for many years the commercial heart of the town. It was the town's market place for over 500 years, and it has accumulated centuries of changing styles. Among them, medieval buildings hidden behind later façades and the Muggleton Inn, an 1827 pub with massive Ionic columns. At the top of street, a drinking fountain has a statue of Queen Victoria, created by sculptor John Thomas around 1862.
