Charles Dickens described Minor Canon Row in "Seven Poor Travellers" as “a quiet place in the shadow of the cathedral”, and so it still is. The terrace of houses was built in 1723 to house Cathedral workers and clergy. The Actress, Dame Sybil Thorndike, and her brother, Russell Thorndike, the author, lived in number 2 between 1884 to 1892, when their father was a minor canon at the Cathedral. The Cathedral organist still lives in Number 7.
