The ultimate sacrifice was paid by many sailors based at nearby Chatham Dockyard throughout countless wars but after the horrendous losses of the First World War a permanent symbol of their courage and heroism was built. The site was extended after World War Two. The Naval Memorial at Chatham stands on the Great Lines and is reached by a steep climb from Chatham Town Centre. The memorial lists all 18,631 sailors lost from Chatham.
