Old Romney was once an island in the River Rother estuary and was known to the Romans as Vetus Rumellenum. It lies two miles inland from New Romney. There is a Norman church worthy of visiting, dedicated to St Clement. The film-maker, Derek Jarman, is buried in the churchyard.
