I would thoroughly recommend the Roman Painted House for an excellent morning out. The excavated wall paintings are in good condition and well presented. There are many interesting, local finds dating from Roman times onwards. My children were well entertained with the selection of Roman games to try, brass rubbing and the chance to dress up as a Roman. There were also quizzes and colouring available. Staff were very helpful and well informed about the display and Roman life in general. There are toilets on site and a range of cafes within easy walking distance. There is free car parking, but the car park is small and was full when we arrived. As the Painted House is so close to the town centre, it’s easier to park at one of the main car parks, then walk.

We had a fantastic day out at the Roman Painted House. As well as chance to see actual Roman mosaics and paintings in situ, there are dozens of Roman archaeological finds, including a rare eagle shaped top piece of a Roman Legion Standard. There are plenty of activities for children, ranging from the chance to dress up in Roman garb through brass rubbing, Roman games and mosaic making. There is a really good “touch” table, where handling of the exhibits is welcomed! The staff are really knowledgeable and ever so helpful. We went for the morning, but could happily have stayed longer! There is a small free car park, but it fills up quite quickly, so you may be better off to park elsewhere.
