Discover over 16 centuries of history at the impressive Pevensey Castle. It was one of the last and strongest of the Roman ‘Saxon Shore’ forts and, by taking an audio tour, you can learn about these origins and its turbulent history throughout the Dark Ages, not to mention its famous visitor in 1066 and its role in World War II. In addition to the tour, you can explore battlements, dungeons and towers within the castle ruins. Also on site is a tearoom, a picnic area and a gift shop.

There's something rather spooky about Pevensey Castle. The ruins are quite substantial, enclosing an area of land that was once right beside the sea. Now the castle is miles from the coast. I learned a great deal about its history on my visit and was surprised to learn that it was last used in a military role as recently as World War Two. Fascinating, charming place, if just a little spooky too.
