Herne Bay's sports and leisure centre has one of the best roller skating rinks in the South East. Other attractions include a gym, a fitness studio, a solarium and a crêche. Badminton, table tennis, squash, football and yoga are among the activities on offer, and roller discos are held every Friday night. The Pier Sports Centre was built to replace the 1909 pier pavilion which burned down in 1970. It was opened in 1976 by Sir Edward Heath.
