This bronze statue, unveiled in 1958 by the Governor of Virginia, commerates the life of Pocahontas and her contribution to Anglo-American relationships. The daughter of a powerful Native American ruler, she is widely remembered for saving the life of John Smith, an English settler, by throwing herself between him and her tribe. She later married another Englishman, John Rolfe, and was presented to James I at court. But, whilst returning to Virginia in 1617, she died at Gravesend and was buried in St George’s. She was 21 years old.
