In 1995 an area of former railway sidings in Lewes in East Sussex called the Railway Land was highlighted for development, a local campaign saved it and created the wonderful Lewes Railway Land Local Nature Reserve. The 25 acre piece of land is located alongside a beautiful stretch of the River Ouse and includes a wide variety of habitats from woods, flood plains, ponds and former fruit orchards. The nature reserve has a large number of nesting birds as well as insects and mammals.
