The Royal Terrace Pier was built in 1844 as The Terrace Pier, but was renamed Royal in 1863 after Princess Alexandra of Denmark arrived there before her marriage to the future Edward VII. The pier is still in use today, but visitors will now see a glass fibre structure rather than the original cast iron Doric columns. The offices built in the 19th Century when the pier became a base for pilots are also still in use today.
