With snow still on the ground and a bracing breeze, we visited the RSPB Nature Reserve at Dungeness for an “Animal Detectives” afternoon. It was absolutely brilliant. Intriguing for children of all ages, we made casts of shells and footprints, has a walk round looking for signs of wildlife and dissected an owl pellet! The children still talk about how much fun it was and are keen to re-visit to look at some of the birds in the reserve. As well as being an absolute must for bird enthusiasts, there is also plenty to attract anyone who enjoys the outdoors.

My wife brought a book on birdwatching with her when we visited Dungeness Nature Reserve. It proved invaluable as this desolate and somewhat lonely part of Kent is a birdwatcher's paradise. It is run by the RSPB and at the main car park there are hides, a visitor centre and a most useful toilet block as the next nearest is about seven miles away.
