The Rye Art Gallery stands at the very heart of the ancient community of Rye in East Sussex, and forms one of the most important cultural hubs for the town. An artist named Mary Stormont opened the gallery in 1957. She based her studios at the gallery and continued to paint, bequeathing a great deal of her work and collection to the gallery when she died. This original hundred or so paintings formed the basis of the collection which has been added to throughout the years.
