Saxon Shore Way
Gravesend, Kent - England, UK
  Share Location Map
The Saxon Shore Way follows what would have been the coastline of the South East some 1500 years ago. It is a long distance footpath running for 163 from Gravesend to Hastings. En route are the High Weald, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, stunning views of Romney Marshes, a wild nearly deserted wetland covering 100 square miles, and the highlight, the White Cliffs of Dover. The walk was opened in 1980, but has since been relaunched with new extensions and variations.

I once set my heart on walking the Saxon Shore Way, after all it's only around 160 miles around the coast to Rye in Sussex. A much wiser person, my wife, soon told me not to be such a fool. I have, however, walked most of it in bite size portions mind. Gravesend, is where the path traditionally starts and will take you off into the bleak beauty of the North Kent marshes with its wonderful fauna and flora. - Chas
