The town of Sheerness on the Isle of Sheppey was first established as a base for the Royal Navy in the 16th Century and over the years many men have sailed from the port to meet their deaths abroad. During the First and Second World Wars many thousands laid down their lives for their country and a major war memorial honours their sacrifice. The memorial takes pride of place in the centre of modern day Sheerness.
