The stunning natural beauty of Southerham Nature Reserve is part of the much larger Malling Down reserve located around one mile east of the town of Lewes in East Sussex. The large area of down is part of the South Downs and has for years been worked as a commercial farm but in recent years the former arable areas have been gradually reverted back to coarse grassland. This will, eventually, encourage the re-introduction of wild orchids, butterflies and birds such as corn buntings.
