St Augustine’s Church in the small village of Northbourne in Kent is an ancient church but one that has a curious link to the American War of Independence. Today’s church was started on the site in the 12th Century by the Norman invaders and much of their craftsmanship can still be seen inside and outside the church today. Also of note is the monument to Sir Edwin Sandys, who died in 1629, who’s work on ‘No taxation without representation’ led directly to the War of Independence.
