The small village of Cooling has a surprising number of historic buildings. Near to the privately owned Cooling Castle can be found the Parish church of St James Church. Set in a desolate location in the middle of the North Kent Marshes Cooling was also home to the celebrated writer Charles Dickens and St James Church was his local parish church where he came to attend services. Today the church holds regular services and festivals throughout the year.
