Within St John the Baptist church at Wateringbury is held an ancient artefact called the Dumb Borsholder. The Borsholder is a three-foot long staff with a wicked hook at one end. The Borsholder was an emblem of office for the deputy to court meetings in the village of Wateringbury. St John the Baptist church is an ancient building believed to have been started soon after the Norman Conquest but is still in regular use today.
