St Leonard's Tower
West Malling, Kent ME19 6PD - England, UK
  Share Location Map

St Leonard’s Tower is a well-preserved example of a small free standing Norman keep, almost complete in its original form. The property is owned and managed by English Heritage, who have signed the area with historical facts and figures. The tower is thought to date back to 1080 and was built by Gundulf, the Bishop of Rochester and took its name from the small chapel of St Leonard’s that once stood close by.

We were on a school trip visiting local landmarks and one of the places we visited was St Leonard's Tower in West Malling. It was a mixed art history visit, so after learning about its past and St Leonard's church before we sat and drew the tower. - Emily Green

This tower seems strangely out of place as it sits right alongside the main road that leads into West Malling, but take away the road and around 900 years of time and the tower's position would appear to be perfect. The structure is all that remains of this listed building, its cold grey walls testimony to the years that have weathered it. My best suggestion to visit it is park your car in the nearby country park and walk back to the tower as there is no parking on the main road and take care crossing the road as it is on a dangerous corner. - Oliver Timpson
