This tower is all that's left of a chapel dedicated to St Mary Magdelen. Dating from the middle ages, the chapel was finally demolished in 1871, but the tower was saved. Inside is the rescued and restored Monument to the Whitefield family. The fine Flemish-style sculpture is by Arnold Quellin and Grinling Gibbons, and it was restored by the Victorian and Albert Museum with funds from the Dept of the Environment and Canterbury City Council. The Monument dates from around 1680.
