St Mary’s Church in the centre of Guildford is both the oldest church and the oldest building in the town. Its tower is of Saxon origin and was therefore built before the Norman Conquest of 1066. Over the next two centuries the rest of the church was built, and the structure that can be seen today has changed very little over the past 750 years. The church also has connections with the famous writer, Lewis Carroll who preached from its pulpit and whose funeral service was held here.
