George IV was a very popular King of Britain and had close connections with maritime affairs having served in the Royal Navy himself whilst a prince. Obviously he had a kinship with the people of Brighton whose entire identity has been shaped by the sea and those that sail on it. This marvellous statue was paid for by public subscription in 1828 as a mark of affection for the peoples king, George IV.
