The Thames and Medway Canal was created by the Victorians as an easier way of transporting goods from the River Medway at Rochester to Gravesend on the River Thames. In 1824 the Canal opened but proved to be a financial failure and was soon closed. Today the route of the canal is a very pleasant and easy walk of around eleven kilometres. Parts of the route are inaccessible including the tunnel, which is now owned by Southeastern trains.
