In Britain, The French Hospital dates from 1718. It was founded with a bequest from Jacques de Gastigny, for the care of French Huguenots, French protestant refuges who had fled religious persecution in France. In the 1960s, this square of elegant Victorian houses was converted into accommodation for the elderly descendants of Hugenots, and it is still managed in keeping with the original 1718 Royal Charter.
