William Hazlitt, the essayist, was born in Maidstone in 1778. This theatre is named after him and its diverse programme of events includes comedy, dance, drama, films, ballet and family shows. The Hazlitt also puts on popular outdoor events throughout the summer, such as Proms in the Park. Also based at the theatre is the Hazlitt Youth Theatre, which hosts an annual summer festival, with workshops, courses and new productions.
