HMS Victory Lord Horatio Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar was built at Chatham. Today the Historic Dockyard has a World War Two destroyer HMS Cavalier, a submarine HMS Ocelot and a Victorian sloop HMS Gannet on display. The dockyard opened to the public in 1984 and since then has grown to include a Wooden Walls exhibition, steam trains, ropery and flag loft and an excellent museum. The Historic Dockyard has the greatest concentration of listed buildings in the South-East including the unique wooden covered slipway

It could be very easy to dismiss The Historic Dockyard Chatham as being irrelevant but that would be to do it a massive injustice. The dockyard at Chatham, during its Royal Navy heyday, was the powerhouse of the local community providing employment to thousands, but its influence went further with the dockyard creating ropes, ships, tackles and a wealth of other items for the nation. Today this massive site offers families a true day out with a myriad of things to do and see. - Patrick Boniface
