This pretty hamlet gets its unusual name as a result of the village being virtually wiped out by the plague during the 14th century. In fact, there is only one original building remaining. Dode Church was built during the Norman era, but fell into disuse in 1367 after the Black Death swept though the population. The deconsecrated church was restored to its former state by the Victorians and now looks virtually identical as to how it was more than 600 years ago.
