This is where monks from Rochester's Priory grew grapes for their wine, and this statue of a monk is a reminder of that time. It was carved from the stump of a Plane Tree, one of many in an avenue of such trees damaged by the 1987 storm. Thankfully, the avenue is now restored. As a public park, the Vines Gardens date from 1880. Other attractions include lawns and shrubberies.
