Thomas Paine was a revolutionary who sought the independence of England’s American colonies. Best known for being Author of The Rights of Man, he resided at Bull House on Lewes High Street between 1768 and 1774. Paine could often be seen playing bowls on the Castle green, skating on the local ponds throughout the winter and arguing heartily at the Headstrong Club – the local debating society held at the White Heart Inn. The building is now home to the Sussex Archaeological Society.
