Located in tranquil surroundings at the heart of the Kent countryside, this English Heritage site represents a fine example of an Elizabethan artillery fort. The building was begun in 1559 and underwent some extensive re-development in the early 17th Century. The idea behind the castle was to defend the English fleet at Chatham, which sadly it did not manage after a Dutch attack in 1667.
