The seaside town of Littlehampton in West Sussex suffered more than most during the First World War, loosing no fewer than 217 men throughout the war. To commemorate their sacrifice an impressive war memorial was authorised to be built directly outside Littlehampton Town Council offices. The monument was unveiled on Wednesday 28th September 1921 by General Lord Horne of Stirkoke, GCB, KCMG, ADC. An extra nineteen names were added to the monument to honour the lost of World War Two.

I always wonder when war memorials such as this one were originally erected that their designers envisioned them being used as the centre piece of large urban roundabouts on busy main roads. This beautiful and large memorial certainly provides a focal point and honours those who made the ultimate sacrifice for peace and I believe everyone should spend some time remembering them in silence. - Helen McHenry
