The abbey has a long and interesting history, and has played an important part in the shaping of the monastic, religious, political and social affairs of this community. Built in 1128, the Cistercian abbey is sadly no longer complete, and only the ruins remain which are overseen with care by English Heritage. There are still some remarkable examples of architecture clear to see.
