Westerham, which lies on the River Darent, was mentioned in the Domesday Book as Oistreham, but had already been settled for thousands of years. A Celtic fortification, a Roman road and the remains of a Roman encampment have been discovered there. Chartwell Manor, former home of Winston Churchill, is located on the outskirts of Westerham and administered by the National Trust.
