Western Heights is a large fortification that was begun building during the Napoleonic Wars in order to protect the English stronghold harbour at Dover. Completed in the 1860s, the site forms one of the most impressive examples of its type in the southern counties. The moat can be visited, and the entire area is overseen by English Heritage who have added signposts with interesting historical information.
