William Cavendish was the Duke of Devonshire, an historic title that is carried by his family over a period of many centuries. He served as a Whig statesman and indeed spent a very brief time as Prime Minister of Great Britain in the late 18th Century. His importance as a politician and a member of the aristocracy has meant he is celebrated in this fine statue on the edge of the Grand Parade.
