Abergavenny Castle was originally a timber building but was rebuilt during the 13th and 14th centuries in stone. Today visitors can wander freely around the impressive ruins of the castle which overlook the mountains that surround it lending it a mysterious and spooky atmosphere when it is misty. The castle was the seat of the medieval lords of Abergavenny and was therefore a target during warfare. There is an old hunting lodge in the castle grounds that now serves as the local museum.
