Brecon castle was built by the Norman invader, Bernard de Neufmarche, to protect the land he had seized from its Welsh rulers. As a motte and bailey castle, and like so many castles built by conquerors in Wales, it was designed to intimidate the Welsh rulers and prevent them from launching an attack to reclaim their lands. Today, the castle is still an impressive site overlooking the river with views of the Brecon Beacons. Adjoining the castle is an attractive hotel which provides the perfect setting for a relaxing break or a base from which to explore the Welsh countryside.
