Caerleon is a small, attractive town standing on the River Usk north of Newport. It was the site of a Roman legionary fortress known as Isca, which could hold 6,000 men. Today is is one of the most important Roman sites in Europe and its ampitheatre, baths and barracks can be visited. There is also a museum.
