Candleston Castle is in fact a fortified manor house dating back to the 14th Century. It was altered many times eventually becoming abandoned some time in the 19th Century. It is thought that the name Candleston may have been derived from the name Cantilupe and that the castle may have belonged to this Norman-Welsh family. It is now an ivy covered ruin that was the centre point of the lost village of Treganlaw, (Welsh for: The town of a hundred hands) Little information is known regarding the village, but it was believed to be situated near to the manor house. What unfortunate end came its inhabitants is not known, but there is the possibility that it was smothered by the moving sands from the nearby dunes. The Castle is said to be haunted and the whole area has a dark and eerie atmosphere. Many old stones and crosses were found around the castle, the ghostly appearances are said to come from a strange area nearby, where the so called Goblin Stone lies.
