The old, industrial docklands of both Cardiff and Penarth have seen extensive regeneration and development over the past 20 years and the Cardiff Bay Barrage is its greatest symbol. The barrage, which links Cardiff docks to Penarth docks, has created a freshwater lake within the bay and is a remarkable feat of engineering. The lake itself is home to a wide range of fish and birds and the barrage offers visitors the perfect way to take in the views of the bay. The barrage has a picnic area and visitors can walk across it from the Penarth side although not all the way across to Cardiff Bay. However, there are waterbuses and a little train that will take you from one side to the other.
