The magnificent, 14 foot high sculptured Carew Cross was erected as a royal memorial to Maredudd ap Edwin who, with his brother Hywel, ruled south-west Wales in the early 11th Century. He died in a battle in 1035 and it is thought the cross was erected soon afterwards. The cross is in two parts with a wheel-head and a separate shaft which is decorated with intricate plaitwork patterns. It is one of the most elaborate early Christian monuments in Wales.
