Cwmbran is a new town located on the edge of the South Wales coalfield and south of Pontypool. It was founded in 1949 after the New Towns Act of 1946. It is a good shopping centre with pedestrianised areas and there is a leisure complex with many facilities. A stretch of the Monmouthshire Canal runs through part of the town.
