The Normans founded Grosmont probably before 1100. It was one of the three castles granted to Hubert de Burgh in 1201; he rebuilt the original earth and timber castle in stone. The high curtain walls and three towers were added around 1230, though the northern tower was demolished in the 14th Century. There were further additions to the castle in the 14th Century by the earls of Lancaster including a tall chimney and an extension to the gatehouse to incorporate a drawbridge.
