Llangorse is the largest natural lake in South Wales, one mile long by half a mile wide. It is used for fishing (you can hire boats for the day) and a variety of watersports, such as sailing and windsurfing, but is also a haven for wildlife, particularly great-crested grebe. The lake attracted settlers from ancient Celtic times onwards; there is an Iron Age inspired Visitor Centre. It is the subject of many legends, such as that a town lies under the waters, and church bells can be heard under the waves during stormy weather.

I’ve spent a couple of summers here, and the area is one of the most beautiful in the UK I think. The lake is ringed by footpaths and bridlepaths and surrounded by mountains so it’s fantastic for walking and especially riding. There are even rails on some of the bridlepaths for you to tie up your horse while you have lunch. The walk up the flat-topped Pen y Fan is especially beautiful. On the lake, there are quiet picnic spots on the south shore, but some of the north shore is more developed, and there is a lakeside camping and caravan park.
