The settlement of Llantwit Major, dating back over 3000 years, came under Norman control after the 1066 Conquest. The building now functioning as the Town Hall was built by Gilbert de Clare as a manorial court shortly afterwards. In the 15th century, the building was extended by Jasper Tudor, the Earl of Pembroke. The building finally became a town hall when parish councils were created in the late 19th century.
